Moe Suffers Knee Injury on Same Course Where He Won Olympic Gold

On the course near Kvitfjell, Norway, where he won a gold medal at the Winter Olympics a year ago, U.S. skier Tommy Moe fell Friday near the end of a super-giant slalom. He tore a ligament in his right knee, suffered additional ligament damage in his left and could be sidelined as long as six months.

Mark O’Meara shot a bogey-free, six-under-par 65 for a two-round total of 133 and a three-stroke lead at the halfway point of the Honda Classic in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Dottie Mochrie’s four-under-par 68 gave her a two-round total of 138 and a one-shot lead in the Ping-Welch’s LPGA tournament in Tucson.

Lee Elder and Bob Dickson shot five-under-par 67s and shared a one-stroke lead after one round of the SBC Dominion Seniors tournament in San Antonio.

Jamaica’s Merlene Ottey won the women’s 60 meters in 6.97 seconds on the opening day of the World Indoor Championships at Barcelona. Canada’s Bruny Surin successfully defended his men’s 60-meter title, winning in 6.46 seconds.

UCLA’s John Godina’s first effort, 66 feet 11 1/4 inches, was enough to win the shotput and the Bruins placed first, second and fifth in the event on the opening night of the NCAA Indoor Championships at Indianapolis.

The Arkansas men did not have an individual winner but scored 30 points in five events to take a lead in their attempt to extend their championship streak to 12. UCLA was second with 22 points.

John Fallon, a New York pathologist who was consulted in the autopsy of Reggie Lewis, confirmed that he told the Massachusetts medical examiner’s office that cocaine could have caused the death of the Boston Celtics’ captain. He stressed, however, that the findings were “totally non-specific” and did not pinpoint cocaine or anything else as the exact cause.

Yankee relief pitcher Steve Howe’s libel suit against the New York Post was dismissed by a judge who said a story about Howe refusing a toke of marijuana actually showed him in a favorable light. . . . Baseball’s labor negotiations will move next week to Lake Buena Vista, Fla., near Orlando.
