Calipatria Prison Guard Fatally Shoots Inmate
SACRAMENTO — A prison guard shot and killed an inmate at Calipatria State Prison, bringing the number of prisoners killed by officers in California prisons to 38 in the past decade, prison officials said Friday.
Timothy D. Jones, 28, became the first inmate in California prisons to be killed this year when he was shot Wednesday at the high-security prison in Imperial County.
Prison spokesman Lt. F. T. Deschler said Jones, a Sacramento man serving an 18-year sentence for robbery and battery, began fighting during dinner time with another prisoner inside their housing block.
Officers fired rubber blocks to stop the fight. When the fight continued, an officer fired a semi-automatic rifle, striking Jones in the chest with a single bullet, Deschler said.
