OXNARD : Woman Killed by Wrong-Way Driver
A 27-year-old Oxnard woman was killed when her car was struck by a suspected drunk driver who was heading south in a northbound lane of Oxnard Boulevard, authorities said Monday.
Rosa Marie Lopez was driving a Ford Escort at 6 p.m. Sunday when a vehicle driven by Alfonso Avila Paz, traveling on the wrong side of the road, hit Lopez’s vehicle, killing her instantly, police said. Paz, 25, of Oxnard, was taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center, where he was treated and released, authorities said.
At the time of the accident, Lopez was returning to Fresno State University, where she was a student. She had come home to visit her family for the weekend, police said.
Paz, who was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol, was being held in lieu of $10,000 bail at Ventura County Jail, authorities said. Police said they were sending the case to the district’s attorney’s office for prosecution.
