PREP ROUNDUP : Walk Forces In Santa Ana’s Winning Run
Martin Vega scored on Juan Ramirez’s walk in the top of the seventh inning to give Santa Ana a 2-1 victory over Costa Mesa in pool play of the Costa Mesa baseball tournament Friday.
With the Mustangs leading, 1-0, the Saints’ Jose Sagrero opened the inning by getting hit by a pitch and Vega reached on a fielder’s choice.
Luis Garcia walked to load the bases and Sagrero scored on a wild pitch.
The Mustangs (0-1) threatened in the bottom of the seventh, but with runners on second and third, reliever Victor Torres recorded a strikeout and a fly out for Santa Ana (1-0).
In the Loara tournament:
Kennedy 2, Dana Hills 1--Jeremy Neuner’s sacrifice fly drove in Jake Koziel with the winning run in the top of the seventh inning.
Pacifica 5, Loara 3--Jeff Barndollar had a two-run double in Pacifica’s four-run sixth inning. The Mariners (1-0) had four hits in the inning.
In the Costa Mesa softball tournament:
Estancia 14, Liberty Christian 13 (5, time limit)--Liz Rule went two for three, including a three-run home run in the fifth, but Liberty Christian’s rally came up short.
In nonleague boys’ volleyball:
Santa Ana 3, Rancho Alamitos 2--Tiafala Latai had 20 kills, Job Jimenez had 16 and Jose Jimenez had 15 for Santa Ana (2-1), which lost the first two games and came back to win 10-15, 4-15, 15-9, 16-14, 15-10.
