City and state parks officials have announced free access for people to cut and collect driftwood on the beach.
The San Pedro entrance of the Ventura Pier parking lot will be open for wood-cutting and collecting from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Sunday. Permits will be issued to both pedestrians and people with four-wheel-drive vehicles.
Up to 30 four-wheel-drive vehicles will be permitted on the beach at one time, said Ventura parks manager William Byerts.
Driftwood cutters and collectors will have to review chain-saw safety measures and sign a release from liability. Only those with a permit will be allowed to proceed.
Officials said they had good response to a similar opportunity last weekend. They said volunteers are also welcome to help clean up the beach.
