2 Schools to Plant Trees for Arbor Day

Two San Fernando Valley schools will celebrate Arbor Day a few days early this year by planting trees and flowers on their campuses Saturday morning.
About 40 students from Cleveland High in Reseda will plant rose bushes, trumpet vines and red hibiscus (red is Cleveland’s school color) throughout the campus, said Melanie Miller, a teacher and coordinator of the Interact Club, an organization for student volunteer projects.
Local businesses donated more than $5,000 worth of plants and supplies for the event, Miller said.
Most of the vegetation at Cleveland died after the school’s sprinkler system was damaged in the Northridge quake, Miller said.
In Northridge, students, teachers and parents at Calahan Street Elementary in Northridge will prepare the soil at the school with rakes and hoes to plant trees and flowers.
Calahan’s PTA had received a $1,000 grant from the Los Angeles Community Greening Grants Program to help make the school greener.
