The Powers of Preservation

Stefanie Powers has a passion for polo ponies and for wild creatures, and this weekend she’ll combine the two for the Celebrity-Pro Polo Benefit at the L.A. Equestrian Center. In 1982, Powers created the William Holden Wildlife Foundation in memory of the late actor who began working in 1956 to preserve wild animals in Kenya. After Holden’s death, Powers carried on his efforts and raises money for the foundation.

On Sunday, she’ll get plenty of help from celebrity friends, including her “Hart to Hart” co-star, Robert Wagner. Wagner, Jerry Van Dyke, Katherine Helmond, Brenda Vaccaro, Elizabeth Montgomery, Alex Cord, Rip Taylor and others will ride in a post-game parade, some on Peruvian Pasos and others--less sure of four-footed transportation--will ride in Land Rovers.

Celebrities who will take up a mallet in the pro-celebrity competition include Powers and William Devane, both seasoned players.

Kelsey Grammer of “Frasier” will sing the national anthem.

Powers, who travels the world promoting the philosophy of the Holden Foundation--that preservation begins with education--still acts. She will appear Monday in the final installment of the “Hart to Hart” reprise, at 9 p.m. on NBC.
