Former Cal State Northridge professor John Baur has left $220,000 in his will to the university for history scholarships.

The first will be awarded this spring.

Baur taught history from 1964 until shortly before his death in 1993. His courses focused mostly on California and the American West.

Thomas Maddux, chair of the CSUN history department, said the number of scholarships, and how often they will be awarded, has not been determined. They will go to undergraduate and graduate students.

Baur wrote four books, including “The Health Seekers of Southern California, 1870-1900,†which dealt with settlers who flocked to the state in hopes of finding cures for tuberculosis and other diseases.

Shortly before he died, Baur gave the school his personal library on California and Western history, Maddux said.
