Filing Period for Flood Assistance Is Extended

To give flood victims more time to file for state and federal aid, the City Council has extended its declaration of city emergency in the wake of the Jan. 4 rainstorm.

Heavy rainfall in Cypress that day flooded more than 300 homes and caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage, city officials said. The City Council passed an emergency declaration shortly after the storm.

But state law limits such declarations to 14 days, unless extended. Had the council not acted at its Monday night meeting to continue the declaration and have it cover the more recent rains, the application period for government aid would have expired.

Police Chief Daryl Wicker said flood victims may call a toll-free phone number to launch an appeal for federal assistance. The number is (800) 462-9029.

The council directed city staff to post notices throughout Cypress alerting residents to the extended filing period.

“I believe all homes should be advised,†Councilwoman Gail H. Kerry said.

Councilman Walter K. Bowman agreed, saying: “This (storm damage) has been one of the major impacts on the community.â€
