TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE

* WATERFORD OFF-RAMP--Approved a motion submitted by Councilman Marvin Braude to close the Waterford Street off-ramp on the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway. The off-ramp, between the Wilshire Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard off-ramps, is to be closed for a year while a study is conducted to check the effects of the closure. It is expected that the closure will not significantly increase traffic on Wilshire or Sunset. A City Council vote on Braude’s motion is set for this week and is expected to pass. Caltrans, which favors the closure, will then have the final vote. The adjacent Waterford Street on-ramp, which handles 350 vehicles per hour during rush hours, will remain open.

CITY COUNCIL

* SUNSET BOULEVARD LEFT TURNS--Approved using $30,000 in Transportation Department funds to install a left turn lane on eastbound Sunset Boulevard where it intersects with Bundy Drive and Saltair Avenue. The lane is expected to cost $100,000. The remaining $70,000 will be provided by four schools near the intersection.

* POLICE CAR CRASH--Authorized the city attorney to pay $190,000 to Andrew Vollmer and his attorneys for injuries that arose from a June 23, 1991, accident caused by a police car. The police car ran a red light at Lincoln and Washington boulevards with no siren on and smashed into Vollmer’s car at 50 m.p.h., causing various internal injuries.
