BOYS’ SOCCER ROUNDUP : El Modena’s Frazier Shuts Out Seventh-Ranked Orange
Senior Roger Van Sluis scored with two minutes left and El Modena upset seventh-ranked Orange, 1-0, Friday in a Century League boys’ soccer game at Orange High School.
The victory was senior Brian Frazier’s seventh shutout of the season and makes El Modena (10-2-1, 4-0) the only undefeated team in the league. Orange dropped to 10-6-2, 4-1.
In another Century League game:
Foothill 1, Canyon 0--Seth Lindauer scored the winning goal for the Knights (5-5-4, 1-2-1) on a penalty kick 12 minutes into the second half.
In the Empire League:
Cypress 2, Loara 0--Mike Gaitley and Bryan Huskey scored for visiting Cypress (12-3-3, 2-1-1). Victor Castro had eight saves for Loara.
Katella 2, Century 1--Darren Zinser and Steve Dodd scored goals for visiting Katella (5-7-5, 2-0-2), which trailed, 1-0, at halftime. Victor Cervantes scored a goal for Century (4-6-1, 0-4-0).
In the Freeway League:
Sunny Hills 3, Buena Park 1--Andy Volpp scored three goals and Jeff Murphy had five saves for 10th-ranked Sunny Hills (13-3-1, 4-0-1). Sergio Rojas scored a second-half goal for Buena Park (5-7-2, 1-3-0).
In the Garden Grove League:
Santiago 4, Garden Grove 0--Albert Mendez scored three goals and Erik Bautista got the other for Santiago (14-2, 5-1). Mendez’s third goal tied the school and league record with his 30th of the season. Hugo Monteon had 13 saves for Garden Grove (2-2-1 in league).
In the Golden West League:
Ocean View 1, Westminster 0--Pat McGuckin, off an assist by Kevin Nimmons, scored the game’s only goal 20 minutes into the first half for Ocean View (3-9-3, 1-3-1). Bobby Dion, who normally doesn’t play goalie, had 12 saves for the shutout.
In the Pacific Coast League:
Laguna Hills 2, Costa Mesa 0--Rob Warren and Dan Carlson each scored for visiting Laguna Hills (7-7-2, 2-2). Sophomore goalie Michael Ochi had four saves, including a penalty kick in his first varsity start of his career. Carlos Loza had nine saves for Costa Mesa (6-7-2, 2-3).
In the Sea View League:
El Toro 4, Irvine 0--Wade Fraser had a goal and an assist for host El Toro (4-9-2, 1-2-1). Goalie Chris Brigham, with six saves, recorded his first shutout of the season.
Santa Margarita 1, Corona del Mar 0--Seth George scored in the first half and Ben Froehlich recorded his ninth save of the season for visiting Santa Margarita (17-0-2), the county’s top-ranked team.
Woodbridge 2, Newport Harbor 1--Michael Bartholomew scored two goals, including the game-winner at the 40-minute mark and Jason Ruggerello had five saves for visiting Woodbridge (12-5-1, 4-0-1). Steve Kleha had three saves for Newport Harbor (14-5-0, 1-3-0).
In the Sunset League:
Edison 1, Marina 0--Jon Ginnaty’s goal in the 60th minute broke the scoreless tie for eighth-ranked Edison (11-3-4, 4-1). Chris Shay recorded his eighth shutout of the season for the Chargers. Bob Yorke had seven saves for Marina.
Fountain Valley 1, Esperanza 0--Adam Novak scored in the 38th minute of the game and Scott Hainlen recorded his 11th shutout of the season for second-ranked Fountain Valley (14-3, 4-1) in a matchup of two of the county’s top teams. Nick Tolman assisted on Novak’s goal for the Barons.
