BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Tape’s Late Scoring Spree Sparks Esperanza

Brian Butler’s two free throws late in overtime helped Esperanza clinch a 62-59 victory over Fountain Valley in a Sunset League game Friday night at Esperanza.

Lohnnie Tape scored 20 second-half points as Esperanza (11-10, 3-2) rallied from a 28-15 halftime deficit. Tape finished with 22 points.

Dan Keller scored 19 points for Fountain Valley (12-6, 4-1).

In other Sunset League games:

Edison 65, Marina 47--Mike Ogas scored 23 and Sean Kurz added 12 for Edison (11-10, 1-4). Dan Perna had 12 for Marina (4-14, 1-4).

Los Alamitos 60, Huntington Beach 49--Ali Ton had 23 points and Jeremy Vandervoet had 11 points and 11 rebounds for eighth-ranked Los Alamitos (16-5, 4-1), which outscored Huntington Beach, 20-9, from the free-throw line. Clay Chilcott had 12 points for Huntington Beach (10-10, 2-3).

In the Academy League:

Capistrano Valley Christian 64, St. Michael’s Prep 33--Andrew Jennings had 20 points and Tamer Ghosheh had 18 for Capistrano Valley Christian (12-5, 3-1). Mark Payne had 13 points for St. Michael’s Prep (1-8, 0-4).

St. Margaret’s 77, Liberty Christian 42--Damian Raibon scored 21 points for host St. Margaret’s (13-3, 4-0).

In the Century League:

El Modena 63, Orange 52--Ryan Villmer scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds for the Vanguards (12-6, 3-2). Teammate Tri Tran added 11 points. Danny Garcia scored 20 for Orange (13-5, 3-2).

Santa Ana Valley 91, Villa Park 66--Olujimi Mann had 29 points and Ike Harmon added 18 for seventh-ranked Santa Ana Valley (13-7, 4-1).

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 73, Kennedy 63--Dustin Miller scored 30 points, including five three-pointers, and Robbie Sammons added 22 points for visiting El Dorado (14-6, 2-2). Justin Zuschlag scored 13 points for Kennedy (7-13, 1-3).

Katella 35, Century 24--Mike Pahl scored 15 points and LaByron Clayton added 12 for host Katella (16-2, 3-1). Neither team scored in the first quarter.

Loara 75, Cypress 71--Neil Thomas had 23 points and Obaid Popal had 20 for host Loara (9-10, 2-2), which was 17 for 17 from the free-throw line and led, 60-49, after three quarters. Brett Boulton had 26 points for ninth-ranked Cypress (15-4, 3-1).

In the Express League:

Huntington Beach Claremont 51, Heritage Christian 46--Steve Kimble scored 19 points, had 12 rebounds and five assists for Claremont (9-5, 2-5). Ryan Cronkite added 10 points and 13 rebounds. Jay Williams scored 16 for Heritage Christian (8-6, 3-3).

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 75, Troy 70--Tim VanDenburg had 25 points and Ryan Schatz had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Fullerton (13-7, 4-1), which outscored Troy, 23-10, from the free-throw line. Troy is 12-9 overall, 3-2 in league.

La Habra 56, Buena Park 48--Dan Ploog scored 21 points for the Highlanders (9-11, 2-3). Justin Marshall added 13. Towan Oliver had 14 points and eight rebounds for Buena Park (9-11, 1-4).

Sonora 56, Sunny Hills 39--The third-ranked Raiders won their 16th consecutive game led by sophomore forward Josh Lien, who scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Lien shot six for nine from the field and seven for eight from the line. Josh Gesicke scored 10 for the Lancers (7-14, 0-4).

In the Garden Grove League:

Bolsa Grande 46, Rancho Alamitos 45--Crispin Chavez’s free throw with 15 seconds left won it for Bolsa Grande (9-9, 3-3). Rancho Alamitos (9-12, 3-3) missed two three-point shots in the last 10 seconds. Chavez led Bolsa Grande with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Garden Grove 64, Santiago 36--Mike Campuzano and David Williams each scored 11 points for host Garden Grove (9-10, 3-3), which led, 30-9, at halftime.

In the Golden West League:

Santa Ana 59, Saddleback 39--Danny Rivero had 16 points and Raul Martinez had 15 points and 12 rebounds for host Santa Ana (6-13, 1-4), which outscored Saddleback, 36-17, in the first half.

In the Olympic League:

Calvary Chapel 67, Cerritos Valley Christian 51--Isaac Leasau had 16 points and Kevin Falconer added 11 points and 11 assists for host Calvary Chapel (16-5, 4-1).

Ontario Christian 87, Orange Lutheran 74--Paul Voortman had 23 points and Jason Lagastee had 22 for Ontario Christian (9-9, 1-3). Sonny Madsen had 20 points and Kyle Salyer had 18 for Orange Lutheran (5-12, 2-3).

In the Orange League:

Valencia 69, Brea Olinda 65--Jamanee Macon scored 18 points and Jermaine Gray had 17 points and 11 rebounds for Valencia (7-14, 4-1). Teammate Sallim Aquil added 15 points. Eric Repp scored 23 in the Wildcats’ (14-7, 4-1) first league loss.

Western 67, Savanna 61--Brett Vernon scored 37 points to lead Western (8-12, 3-2).

Dana Hills 62, San Clemente 57--Donald Meyers scored 17 points for Dana Hills (9-10, 2-3). Gabe Gardner scored 21 points for San Clemente (8-12, 0-5).

Trabuco Hills 82, Mission Viejo 72--Rob Warnick had 27 points and John Paisley added 21 for Trabuco Hills (11-9, 3-2). Austin Moherman had 28 points and 15 rebounds for Mission Viejo (11-8, 2-3).
