HOLLYWOOD : State Urged Not to Pay for Delays Over Tunnel Flaws

Assemblyman Richard Katz on Thursday asked the state to withhold funds for any increased costs because of problems that led to last year’s shutdown of the Los Angeles subway project.
“What a sad joke on the people of Los Angeles,” the San Fernando Valley Democrat said in a letter to the California Transportation Commission. “The taxpayers should not bear added costs due to . . . the MTA’s mismanagement.”
Tunneling resumed Jan. 7, nearly five months after work was halted because of sinkage along Hollywood Boulevard.
Katz said the MTA has estimated that repairs to the tunnel would cost between $2 million and $5 million but has said a final figure would not be known for about a year.
MTA officials have said they will seek reimbursement from the design, construction and management consultants for all costs associated with the sinkage.
