BOYS’ ROUNDUP : Monroe Survives on Threes, Wins on a One
The long-range shooting of Monroe High senior guard Shaka Stiner saved the Vikings, The Times’ fifth-ranked team, from an upset in a Valley Pac-8 Conference basketball game Wednesday.
Monroe beat Poly, 69-68, thanks to Stiner’s two three-point baskets in the final 65 seconds and a free throw by Quincy Brooks with one second left.
With 1 minute 5 seconds left Stiner (21 points, five three-pointers) hit a jump shot from the wing to tie the game. Stiner hit another with 16 seconds left to give the Vikings (11-3, 2-0 in conference play) a three-point lead.
A three-pointer by Cameron Hilton tied the game for underdog Poly (6-7, 0-2), but then the Parrots fouled Brooks, who hit the front end of a one-and-one.

Reseda 64, Canoga Park 61--Ronnie Cooke sank a three-point basket with nine seconds to play to lift the Regents in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Canoga Park.

Cleveland 55, Granada Hills 54--Tommy Yoon failed to get off a shot with eight seconds left as the Highlanders (7-8, 0-2) lost a North Valley Conference game.

Grant 74, Van Nuys 52--Ronald Patterson scored 31 points, including a school-record eight three pointers for the Lancers (10-5, 2-0) in a Valley Pac-8 conference game at Grant.

Kennedy 71, San Fernando 51--Jelani Janisse had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Golden Cougars (10-4, 2-0) in Northwest Valley Conference game.
Steve Williams scored 20 points for San Fernando (8-7, 0-2).

North Hollywood 88, Sylmar 62--Arthur Lee scored 24 points and Shannon Johnson grabbed 18 rebounds for the Huskies (9-6, 2-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at North Hollywood. Joe Guerra had 22 points for Sylmar (2-11, 1-1).

Notre Dame 77, St. Francis 53--Ryan Bowne scored 11 of his 14 points in the third quarter as Notre Dame pulled away in a Mission League game.

Chatsworth 67, El Camino Real 53--Jerome Joseph and Tariq Hill combined for 46 points against El Camino Real in a Northwest Valley Conference game.
Joseph scored 23 points for Chatsworth (11-4, 2-0).

Channel Islands 69, Newbury Park 59--Jermaine Samuel scored 26 points and O.J. Thomas added 14 as Channel Islands (7-9, 1-6) downed Newbury Park (5-11, 1-6) in a Marmonte League game.

La Canada 92, Blair 54--The Spartans outscored the Vikings, 31-9, in the first quarter of a Rio Hondo League game.
Charlie Petit scored 32 points, 24 on three-point shots for the Spartans (12-7, 4-0).

Saugus 64, Hart 41--Jeff Rogers had 15 points in a Foothill League game for Saugus (8-9, 3-2). Nick Lewandowski led Hart (9-10, 2-3) with 10 points.

Harvard-Westlake 68, Alemany 56--Jason Collins had 28 points and 21 rebounds in a Mission League game at Alemany.
Jarron Collins added 16 points for the Wolverines (19-1, 7-0).

Royal 65, Agoura 63--Donnie Wright’s 10-foot jumper in the lane with 10 seconds left gave the Highlanders a victory in a Marmonte League game at Agoura.

Montclair Prep 6, Whitney 1--Center halfback David Warsavsky scored three goals and had one assist for Montclair Prep. Left wing Matt Ghetto added two goals for the Mounties (4-4).

Chatsworth 2, Cleveland 1--Chancellor midfielder Trevor Schmidt made two goals, while freshman goalie Guy Klein got his first victory with seven saves.

Royal 1, Agoura 0--Leading scorer Jesse Garner’s eighth goal of the season early in the second half lifted Royal (13-4-2, 4-1) to victory at Simi Valley. Chris Tosh assisted on the goal.

Chaminade 4, Crespi 3--Senior Reza Zamani scored the winning goal with five minutes left to lift the Eagles (6-6-2) to victory.
