LOS ANGELES : City Council Advocates ‘Total Gun Control’
A Los Angeles City Council majority approved a policy statement Wednesday advocating “total gun control,†despite objections that it violates the constitutional right to bear arms.
“I can’t vote for total gun control because . . . I think that is, in fact, in essence, outlawing guns,†said Councilman Joel Wachs. “Its intent is to do that completely.â€
The legislative policy statement, passed on a 9-2 vote, also endorses bills on state licensing and registration of firearms, restrictions on possession and gun dealers and bans of specific weapons.
The council approved a package of legislative policy statements as part of an annual routine to call for state and federal legislation on various issues.
