Prosecutors on Tuesday postponed filing charges against a Ventura County fire captain who was arrested after allegedly selling drugs to a police informant.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Charles Roberts declined to comment on any possible charges in the case of Capt. William Elliot Handy, 48, who is on leave from the Ventura County Fire Department station in Piru. Municipal Judge Vincent J. O’Neill Jr. postponed the case until Feb. 15 after no complaint was filed for arraignment.

Handy’s attorney, Louis B. Samonsky, said he could not comment on the postponement because he has not seen any evidence or official allegations against his client.

“I don’t have anything to answer to because nothing’s been charged,†Samonsky said. “I’ve not been given police reports. He just described the arrest to me.â€

Handy was arrested Dec. 21 in the sale of half an ounce of methamphetamine to the informant at an Albertson’s Food & Drug Store on Reino Road in Newbury Park, sheriff’s deputies said.

Acting on a tip that Handy had sold drugs from his Newbury Park home, deputies also served a search warrant on the house and seized a cache of weapons and a bomb, police said..
