COLLEGE BASKETBALL : Chime Is Right for an Upset

Phillip Chime’s layup with 10.7 seconds to play in overtime lifted Texas San Antonio to an 87-85 upset victory over 13th-ranked Arizona State on Sunday night at Tempe, Ariz.

Arizona State (5-2) led by 10 points in the second half.

But Texas San Antonio (3-2) sent the game into overtime when Marlon Anderson’s layup with two-tenths of a second remaining tied the score at 74-74.

Cody Johnson’s layup with 4:11 to play gave Texas San Antonio its first lead since the game’s opening basket. Darren Webber scored six of the Roadrunners’ next eight points to give Texas San Antonio an 84-80 lead with 45.5 seconds remaining.

An offensive foul on Arizona State guard Marcell Capers seemed to ice the game for the Roadrunners, but Chime was given a technical for hanging on the rim after he was whistled for traveling.

Isaac Burton made the technical free throws to pull Arizona State within 84-82. Thaddeus Wordlaw made a free throw to extend the Roadrunners’ lead, but Sun Devil forward Ron Riley made his second three-point basket with 15.4 seconds remaining to tie the score.

As Arizona State watched Riley’s basket go through the net, Chime ran downcourt and made the decisive basket off a long inbounds pass.

St. Joseph’s 60, No. 22 Villanova 57--Carlin Warley’s free throw and Dmitri Domani’s two foul shots in the final 30 seconds lifted the Hawks (3-0) over the Wildcats (4-3) at Philadelphia.

After Villanova’s Kerry Kittles tied the score at 57-57 on a layup with one minute to play, Warley was fouled by Jonathan Haynes. Warley made the first of two free throws with 27.9 seconds remaining before Villanova called time out with 17 seconds left.

Domani then drew an offensive foul on Haynes and converted both foul shots with 2.6 seconds to play.

Mark Bass and Bernard Blunt had 13 points each for St. Joseph’s.
