GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Hoerner Helps Fullerton Pull Away
Nadia Hoerner scored 19 points and Fullerton pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Apple Valley, 41-35, in the first round of the Brea-Olinda Ladycat Classic girls’ basketball tournament Tuesday at Brea.
Cara Dykes scored 10 for Fullerton (3-1), which outscored Apple Valley, 14-8, in the fourth quarter.
In another Ladycat Classic game:
Esperanza 66, Rancho Cucamonga 43--Lindsay Foss scored a game-high 20 points and Leah Combs added 12 points to lead Esperanza (3-0) in the first round.
In the University tournament:
Trabuco Hills 64, Esperanza JV 31--Sarah Warnick scored 17 points and LaShieka Henderson added 13 to lead Trabuco Hills (3-1) in pool play.
Villa Park 50, Pacifica 39--Erin White scored 13 points and Missy Bynon added eight points and seven assists to lead Villa Park (3-0).
University 58, El Toro 39--Heather Snavely scored 13 points, Pam Loud added 12 points and 14 rebounds and Rachel Lawrence had 12 points and nine assists to lead University (2-0).
Capistrano Valley 57, Valencia 41--Jennifer Garrett had a game-high 25 points and 15 rebounds and Sarina Kissel added 12 points to lead Capistrano Valley (2-0). Jamie Snavely had 11 points for Valencia (1-1).
In nonleague girls’ basketball:
Marina 77, La Habra 45--Shandy Robbins had 30 points and 13 rebounds and Sonya Bryant had 18 points for visiting Marina (4-0), which scored 21 consecutive points in the second quarter.
Aimee Weathers had 15 points to lead La Habra (0-2).
Western 70, Orange 45--Pearl Mercer scored 21 points and Adrienne Ratajczak had 16 points and six steals for host Western (2-3).
Katella 76, Sunny Hills 39--Michelle Bye led Katella (2-3) with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Kristy Oliver had 13 points and Kristy Kette 12. Randi Kameoka scored a game-high 27 points for Sunny Hills (0-5).
Kennedy 50, Savanna 40--Karin Kitagawa scored 15 points and had eight assists to lead Kennedy (3-1).
Cypress 32, Brethren Christian 29--Kelly Fleischman had eight points and Stacy Silva had 13 rebounds for Cypress (3-0), which outscored Brethren Christian, 16-11, in the first half.
Rosary 89, Santa Margarita 54--Kathleen Celio had 27 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists and Lauren Murphy added 19 points for Rosary (4-1), which led, 48-18, at the half.
Whittier Christian 42, Whittier California 12--Alana Kempton had 19 points, including four three-pointers, for Whittier Christian (3-2).
El Dorado 55, El Modena 30--Jamie Nebeker scored 12 points and Shanna Renken and Kim Korsmeyer each had 10 points for host El Dorado (2-0).
Loara 54, Buena Park 25--Paola Flores had 15 points, six assists and nine steals and Christina Colon had 13 points to lead host Loara (2-1).
Capistrano Valley Christian 52, Downey Calvary Chapel 26--Jessica Olivier scored 18 points and grabbed 18 rebounds and Hayley Hall had seven assists for Capistrano Valley Christian (2-2).
Irvine 59, Laguna Beach 33--Shawnee Stevens scored 17 points, Thea Christenson grabbed 11 rebounds and Sarah Usherwood had 12 points and four steals for Irvine (4-0), which led, 23-4, after the first quarter.
Santa Ana 57, Santa Ana Valley 41--Tanzenika Holmes scored 24 points to lead Santa Ana (3-1). Holmes, who is averaging 24 points after four games, also had 12 rebounds. Teammate Sue Nuth added 12 points.
Liberty Christian 41, Heritage Christian 19--Becky Rendon had 19 points and Lisa Winters had 11, including three three-pointers, to lead visiting Liberty Christian (4-0). Israel Green had eight points and 13 rebounds and Christa Larson had six points for Heritage Christian (0-2).
