HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL / SAUGUS TOURNAMENT : Antelope Valley Races to Championship
SAUGUS — Some nerve, that Antelope Valley High team.
First, the Antelopes knock out Saugus, the tournament host. Next, they eliminate last season’s tournament champion, La Canada.
Saturday, the Antelopes ran away with the championship game of the Saugus tournament with a 73-61 victory over Thousand Oaks.
“We played as hard as we could and we shot the ball well,†said Antelope Valley Coach Tom Mahan, whose team led by as many as 26 points after taking a 22-7 first-quarter lead.
Le’tre Kelly had 26 points and nine rebounds and Joe Glover added 23 points for Antelope Valley (3-0).
Mike Lauer led Thousand Oaks (3-1) with 15 points.
Oxnard 58, Quartz Hill 51--Danny Sweeney scored 13 points and Ross Randolph added 10 to lead Oxnard in the consolation final.
Canyon 67, Saugus 63--Greg Minor scored 24 points in leading the Cowboys (2-2) to seventh place. Jeff Rogers led Saugus with 18 points.
Highland 73, Victor Valley 71--Jamal Dedeaux had 25 points and John Burrell added 24 for Highland (4-1) in the fifth-place game.
