OUTLOOK
Shoemaker takes over for long-time coach Tim Travers (now an assistant at Saddleback College) and brings extensive coaching experience to the Chargers. Shoemaker spent the last six seasons as an assistant at the University of the Pacific and also coached at La Mirada High before UOP. So far, he likes what he sees at El Toro. “I got a good look at the team coaching them during the summer, and I think we’re pretty talented,” Shoemaker said. “We can shoot the ball pretty well and we’re versatile, which I like.” Senik, who will play point guard, and Ellis are the top perimeter shooting threats. Ellis had arthroscopic surgery on both knees five weeks ago and might not be ready early in the season. Michael is the team’s top defender, but Shoemaker is concerned about El Toro’s rebounding ability. “We’re obviously smaller than what I’m used to at the college level, but we do have some decent size, so I’d like to see us improve a lot on the boards,” he said. Wulfemeyer is the son of Orange County prep scoring legend Mark Wulfemeyer, who played at Troy.
