A Marine from Camp Pendleton was being held by military authorities in connection with the death of his 3-year-old stepson Sunday.
Lance Cpl. Nathan Lewis, 20, of Albion, Mich., was placed in custody after questioning by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, according to Cpl. Anne Donnelly, a base spokeswoman.
The medical examiner’s office in San Diego County has not determined a cause of death and an autopsy is scheduled for today, officials said.
On Saturday night, Camp Pendleton fire officials responded to an emergency call Lewis made from his residence on base and transported the child, Anthony Williamson, to the nearby Naval Hospital. Williamson was flown by Life Flight helicopter to Children’s Hospital and Health Center in San Diego and died early Sunday.
A 6-month-old boy, identified as Lewis’ son Xavier, was also taken from the home to the Naval Hospital and was later transferred to the Naval Hospital’s Child Protection Unit.
