PREP VOLLEYBALL : State’s Best Seeded No. 1 in Regional

Newport Harbor, the top-ranked team in the State, is seeded No. 1 for the Southern California region of the Division I State girls’ volleyball championships and will play Millikan in a first-round match Tuesday at Newport Harbor.
The Sailors, also ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today and Volleyball Monthly, defeated Mira Costa, 15-5, 15-1, 15-7, in the Southern Section Division I final Saturday.
Second-seeded Mira Costa plays at Chatsworth in the first round.
Chatsworth, facing top-seeded Palisades for the City Section 4-A Division title last Saturday night at Occidental College, broke open a tight final game after midnight.
With Chatsworth ahead, 8-7, senior Jennifer Joseph served six consecutive points to boost second-seeded Chatsworth past the four-time defending champion Dolphins, 10-15, 16-14, 9-15, 15-11, 15-9, in a match that ended at 12:10 a.m.
Huntington Beach and Edison, semifinalists in the Southern Section Division I playoffs, are seeded first and fourth in the Southern California Division II state regional.
Bishop Montgomery (Division III), Calvary Chapel (Division IV) and Brentwood (Division V) are also seeded No. 1 for the Southern California Regionals.
Second-round matches are Saturday and the regional finals are Nov. 29.
The State finals, pairing the Southern California and Northern California regional winners, are Dec. 3 at Cal State Fullerton.
