After winning the last two City Section Division 4-A girls’ team tennis titles with young teams, Woodland Hills Taft High was favored to win the championship this year with a squad of seniors.
Instead, Palisades upset the Toreadors, 6-1, at the Universal Racquet Centre in Studio City on Thursday.
Before the final, Palisades Coach Bud Kling said his team had an even chance of winning, but he was worried how his No. 2 doubles team would play after one of the girls, Jennie Wilson, suffered an injury.
Kling went to his junior varsity team for a substitute, selecting Christin Cho.
“Cho played really solid tennis for us,” Kling said. “She wasn’t intimidated and really played aggressively.”
Cho and Alison Fischer easily won the No. 2 doubles match, 6-4, 6-3.
In the 3-A final, Carson’s 5-2 victory over Eagle Rock was clinched when its No. 1 doubles team of Jessica Quileza and Christina Banania hung on for a 6-0, 6-7 (7-5), 6-3 victory over Jenny Gonzales and Alice Shen.
