McDonnell Douglas Jetliner Certified: The company’s twin-engine MD-90 was certified by the Federal Aviation Administration, clearing the way for Delta Air Lines to take first delivery of the intermediate-range jet in February. The MD-90, a single-aisle, 160-seat successor to McDonnell’s MD-80, is being built in Long Beach. It was designed to accommodate new noise and emissions standards for commercial aircraft. McDonnell has 72 firm orders for the MD-90, which sells for about $30 million.
