SANTA CLARITA — A Lancaster teen-ager was killed Thursday when he lost control of his car, swerved into oncoming traffic and collided with a truck, authorities said.
The noontime accident occurred when the youth, 18, tried to pass a car while driving south on Sierra Highway near Avenue D at about 80 m.p.h., witnesses told investigators. Seeing northbound traffic closing in on him, he veered back into the southbound lane. He lost control and collided head on with a truck in the southbound lane, which had veered across the road in an attempt to avoid him, said Officer Richard Perez of the California Highway Patrol.
The youth, whose name was not immediately available, was thrown from the car and died at the scene, Perez said. The driver of the truck was treated at Antelope Valley Hospital for minor injuries.
