Completion of another link in the Backbone Trail and the 16th anniversary of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area will be celebrated with a ceremony Thursday.
The public is invited to the 10 a.m. celebration, sponsored by the Mountains Conservancy Foundation and the Santa Monica Mountain Trails Council. The event will take place at the Tunnel 1 pullout on Kanan Road.
In the past year, the National Park Service has acquired eight properties totaling 120 acres along the Backbone Trail corridor, said David E. Gackenbach, recreation area superintendent.
About 13 miles of trail remain to be acquired or built from Kanan Road west to Circle X Ranch.
Elected officials, park agency representatives, trail advocates and hikers will be present at the celebration.
