Orange Coast 42, Northwestern 38--Jeff Clayton’s 10-yard touchdown run with 5:10 remaining in the fourth quarter gave Orange Coast its first victory of the season.
The Pirates (1-6, 1-2) outgained Southwestern, 460-444, in total yards, dropping Southwestern to 0-6-1, 0-2-1.
Chris Jackson got the Pirates on the board, trailing, 14-0, in the first quarter. Jackson caught a 29-yard scoring pass from quarterback Matt Sauk to cut the deficit to 14-7.
Orange Coast fell behind, 28-7, before Jackson caught his second touchdown pass of the game, a 14-yard score from Sauk. The Pirates trailed, 28-13, at halftime.
After Clayton’s one-yard scoring run cut the lead to 28-21 in the third quarter, Sauk connected on his third touchdown of the game, a 22-yard pass to Jackson. The failed extra point conversion left the Pirates trailing by one, 28-27.
Southwestern scored the next 10 points, increasing the lead to 38-27 in the fourth quarter.
Sauk led Orange Coast back again, scoring on a one-yard run. The two-point conversion pulled the Pirates to within 38-35, setting up Clayton’s final touchdown.
Clayton led the Pirates with 180 yards in 26 carries. Sauk completed 12 of 21 passes for 230 yards. Jackson caught five passes for 142 yards.
Saddleback 25, Riverside 23--Shad Hinchen ran a kickoff back 100 yards for a touchdown and had an 80-yard punt return to lead Saddleback to it’s first victory of the year.
Saddleback, which was celebrating it’s homecoming, held off a late rally from Riverside, which scored the last nine points of the game but failed on a two-point conversion when Anthony Richardson was stopped by linebackers Andy Osborne and Jeff Fackrell at the one-yard line.
