Campbell, Lynch, Peeler Key in Laker Shake-Up : Pro basketball: Divac to stay at center, Lynch wins power forward job and rookie Jones might get off-guard spot.

That plan by the Lakers to switch Vlade Divac to power forward and Elden Campbell to center?

Never mind.

Coach Del Harris announced Saturday that not only will Divac stay in his familiar center spot, but that Campbell has lost his power forward job to George Lynch and will probably be coming off the bench when the regular season begins Friday at Detroit. In another possible shake-up from last season, Harris also said he is leaning toward rookie Eddie Jones in the opening lineup at shooting guard over Anthony Peeler, who started every game he played during an injury-plagued 1993-94.

The significant changes come after Peeler, bothered by a strained left (shooting) wrist, made only 33.3% of his attempts in the eight exhibition games and Campbell made another bad impression. They also come despite Jones having never played an NBA game that counted and Lynch, the former starting small forward, being only 6 feet 7.

“I think Elden can play better than he’s playing and play harder than he’s playing,” Harris said, adding that Campbell will still get minutes at center and with Divac.

Of the battle at shooting guard, Harris said:

“We think Anthony Peeler can play better than he’s played, but he has been nursing a strained wrist, and it seems to be getting better now. . . . We know Anthony can shoot. The problem is sometimes when Anthony’s shot isn’t going well, it affects his defense and overall game. Then that’s a real negative.”
