REGIONAL ROUNDUP : Johnson Leads North Carolina Over N.C. State
Leon Johnson rushed for 133 yards in 21 carries and scored three first-half touchdowns against North Carolina State’s fourth-ranked defense as No. 24 North Carolina dominated the Wolfpack, 31-17, in an Atlantic Coast Conference game Saturday at Chapel Hill, N.C.
Johnson scored on a three-yard run and on pass plays of 21 and 11 yards from Jason Stanicek as the Tar Heels, 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the ACC, rebounded from last weekend’s 34-10 loss to No. 18 Virginia. The Wolfpack (5-2, 3-1) was limited to 60 yards in the first half.

Scott Milanovich completed 25 of 35 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns and Maryland’s defense frustrated three Tulane quarterbacks in a 38-10 nonconference victory at College Park, Md. Maryland (4-4) hasn’t been at .500 or better after eight games since 1990. Tulane (1-7) has lost its last two games by a combined 72 points. . . . Clemson’s Louis Solomon ran for 159 yards and a touchdown and passed for one as the Tigers (3-5, 2-4) broke a three-game losing streak with a 24-8 ACC victory over Wake Forest (2-7, 0-6) at Clemson, S.C.
EAST
Penn (6-0, 4-0) extended its Division I-AA winning streak to 18 games with a 14-6 Ivy League victory over Yale (3-4, 1-3) at Philadelphia. . . . Cornell (6-1, 3-1) had five turnovers and lost, 16-3, to Brown (4-3, 1-3) in an Ivy League game at Ithaca, N.Y. . . . Vin Ferrara, completing 16 consecutive passes in one stretch, passed for 302 yards and three touchdowns as Harvard (4-3, 2-2) recorded a 35-12 Ivy League victory over Dartmouth (3-4, 1-3) at Hanover, N.H. . . . Marcellus Wiley ran for a touchdown and then made a key fumble recovery in the fourth quarter as Columbia (4-2-1) notched a 17-10 Ivy League victory over Princeton (5-2, 2-2) at New York.
SOUTH
Louisville (5-3) took the opening kickoff and drove 65 yards on nine running plays for the game’s only touchdown in a 10-6 victory over Memphis (5-3) at Louisville, Ky. . . . Marcus Crandell passed for two touchdowns and ran for one as East Carolina (5-3) went on a third-quarter spree and cruised to a 35-21 victory over Cincinnati (0-7-1) at Greenville, N.C. . . . Redshirt freshman Heath Graham passed for 195 yards to lead Southern Mississippi (5-4) to a 47-29 victory over Tulsa (2-6) at Hattiesburg, Miss.
WEST
Craig Whelihan passed for 305 yards and four touchdowns to lead Pacific (5-3, 3-1) to a 28-6 Big West victory over Utah State (2-6, 1-3) at Stockton. The Tigers are one victory shy of their first winning season since 1977. . . . Nevada Las Vegas (5-3, 4-0) notched a 23-10 Big West victory over San Jose State (1-7, 1-2) at Las Vegas.
