GARDEN GROVE — Eric Shaner scored on a pair of short runs as host Bolsa Grande defeated La Quinta, 14-10, Friday night in a mistake-filled Garden Grove League game.
Shaner, who played the second half with a broken left arm, capped a 10-play, 66-yard march when he bulled in from one yard on fourth down for the winning score.
The Matadors (2-6, 1-3) were aided on the drive when the Aztec line jumped offside on a fourth-down punt, giving Bolsa Grande a first down. Two plays later on second and three, David Price found Paul Sharpe for a 36-yard completion. Shaner would plunge in four plays later.
La Quinta (1-7, 0-5) shot itself in the foot regularly. The game was epitomized near the end when the Aztecs, trying to punt the ball away, committed two illegal-procedure penalties. When they finally did get away a kick that counted, the Aztecs were flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Still, La Quinta managed to lead at the half, thanks to Jhamal Dawkins. The sophomore halfback rushed for 91 yards--or all but two of his team’s total output--in the first half, including a 62-yard touchdown sprint in the second quarter that gave the Aztecs their only lead, 10-6.
