CANYON COUNTRY — Canyon High kicker Rick Engbrecht’s 23-yard field-goal attempt sailed wide left with 20 seconds to play, enabling Saugus to escape with a 14-13 Foothill League victory Friday night at Canyon High.
Saugus (5-2-1, 3-0 in league play) took a 14-13 lead midway through the third quarter when quarterback Kevin Carrasco connected with Mark Beatty with an eight-yard touchdown pass.
Kicker Derek Lyons’ extra point proved to be the difference.
Canyon (2-5-1, 1-2) recovered an onside kick to open the second half, and three plays later Shaun Kelso scored on a two-yard run.
Engbrecht, who scored on a nine-yard reception from quarterback Ahjeron Palmer in the second quarter, missed the extra point.
