There are 1,700 lighted street signs in Irvine.

City officials know because they counted them.

The city recently calculated the cost of putting block numbers on the large brown street-name markers that hang from traffic signals.

Officials discovered that the numbers can’t simply be added to the existing signs. Rather, all 1,700 signs would have to be replaced, at a cost of $289,000, said Robert W. Tracy, acting public works director.

Officials also found that adding the block numbers would require reducing the size of the letters that spell out the street names.

Citing a poor “cost-benefit ratio,” Tracy is not recommending any change.
