Free Fire Safety Checks Offered

There goes one more excuse for not making your home fire-safe: The Orange Fire Department is offering the Home Safety and Security Program to people older than 60.

A firefighter will install smoke detectors free of charge in the home of any senior. The firefighter will also perform a general home safety check, if requested.

Along with the smoke detectors, which include batteries, seniors will be given a packet of information from the Fire Department and the county’s Area Agency on Aging.

The folders will include a medication management chart, a home safety checklist, emergency phone numbers and additional tips on fire safety.

IRVINE

Road Rally, Barbecue to Benefit Center

A road rally and barbecue to benefit the Irvine Senior Center begins at 1 p.m. Saturday and will route drivers through the streets of Irvine and the Saddleback Valley.

Sponsored by the Irvine Spectrum and the Newport Beach Sunrise Rotary clubs, the rally is open to all licensed drivers.

Coordinators say the rally will be a test of time and direction only--not speed. The cost of the rally and barbecue dinner for two is $75. Information: (714) 367-1910.

Volunteers Sought for Parties, Programs

Senior volunteers are welcome and needed for a variety of events in San Juan Capistrano. Hosts and hostesses are needed for monthly potluck parties, general meetings or group fund-raising projects and other community programs.

People who join the San Juan Seniors Club can receive current information about programs for those 55 and older. Membership is $5 a year. Information: (714) 443-6358.

SANTA ANA

Training Program Will Pay a Wage

The Asian American Senior Citizens Service Center has received a grant from the National Asian Pacific Center on Aging to manage a job training program for low-income Asian American seniors.

Orange County enrollees in the center’s Senior Community Service Employment Program will work 20 hours a week at minimum wage, $4.25 an hour. The center is seeking public agencies and nonprofit service agencies to provide training and supervision.
