SAN FRANCISCO — Pacific Bell’s Message Center malfunctioned for the second time in a little more than a month Friday, losing thousands of customers’ messages.
PacBell officials were still trying to determine the cause of Friday evening’s outage, which affected customers in area codes 415, 510, 408 and 707. Since its debut in 1991, the Message Center has been plagued by problems, generally due to call overloads or computer problems.
The Message Center has about 400,000 customers statewide. Many customers were without service for more than four hours Friday, PacBell spokeswoman Judy Peterson said.
