PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Mater Dei Dominates Hawthorne

Mater Dei scored 38 points in the last eight minutes of the first half and rolled to a 52-11 victory over Hawthorne Friday night at Santa Ana Stadium.

The second-ranked Monarchs (3-0) showed no weaknesses, forcing seven turnovers, dominating special teams play and were nearly flawless on offense.

Hawthorne, ranked second in Division II, stayed with Mater Dei through the first quarter, but collapsed in the second.

The assault began when Rod Perry caught a 43-yard touchdown pass over the middle from John Flynn, giving the Monarchs a 14-0 lead with 8 minutes 11 seconds left in the first half.

After Hawthorne failed to gain a first down, Perry set up Mater Dei’s third score when he returned the punt 27 yards to the Cougar 21.

Three plays later, Steve Bodnar scored his second touchdown of the game on a 14-yard pass from Flynn.

Mater Dei then hammered Kelvin Hunter on the ensuing kickoff, separating him from the ball, which was recovered by Douglas Odom at the Hawthorne 15.

On the next play, David Castleton caught a 15-yard scoring pass to make it 28-0 with 4:03 remaining in the half.

Mater Dei lineman Brad Williams swatted away a pitch out, picked it up and returned it 15 yards for the touchdown.

Hawthorne then fumbled the kickoff and Flynn hit Castleton on an 11-yard slant for a touchdown.

Another Cougar turnover set up the last of the second-quarter barrage as Patrick Shinnefield booted a 49-yard field goal as the first half whistle sounded giving Mater Dei a 45-0 lead.
