BellSouth Wins OK to Provide Cable Service: Atlanta-based BellSouth Corp. won federal court approval to provide cable television service in Alabama in the same region where it offers phone service. U.S. District Judge Sharon Blackburn in Birmingham overturned a 1984 law that bars phone companies from providing cable programming in their local service areas. Blackburn said the law violates BellSouth’s First Amendment rights. BellSouth is the third regional Bell operating company to win an appeal of the 1984 Cable Act. Bell Atlantic Corp. won an appeal in August, 1993; US West Inc. won its in June. Other regional Bells have similar cases pending.
