Cornerback Darryl Henley met the final demand of his bail obligation Wednesday when a bail bondsman pledged to post a $600,000 bond that will keep Henley out of jail on cocaine conspiracy charges.
Henley broke a 3 p.m. deadline to secure the bond, which a federal judge ordered two weeks ago.
Hastily called off the practice field Wednesday, Henley went into the men’s room to avoid media attention and met with the bondsman, who agreed to secure the $600,000 bond and documents were filed in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana by 4 p.m.
Henley paid $60,000, or a 10% deposit, to the bail bondsman, who in turn put up the $600,000.
The U.S. Attorney’s office acknowledged that prosecutors were satisfied that Henley had met the bail requirements needed to guarantee his appearance at trial on cocaine conspiracy charges in January.
“The government has been informed that Darryl Henley has provided $60,000 to a bail bondsman who put up a surety bond of $600,000 on Mr. Henley’s behalf,” Assistant U.S. Atty. Deirdre Z. Eliot said.
Henley started in place of an injured Steve Israel (tendinitis in left knee) in Sunday’s 34-19 loss to San Francisco. Although Henley practiced with the first string Wednesday, Coach Chuck Knox has yet to name him the starter.
Knox said Israel had an MRI exam on the knee and received an injection, but is listed as day to day.
