Southern California’s toughest high school water polo tournament, the South Coast Tournament, starts today at Newport Harbor, Corona del Mar, Tustin and Irvine high schools.
Top-ranked teams in four of the Southern Section’s six divisions, including Long Beach Wilson, the top-ranked team in Division I, will be present. Of the top 10 in the Orange County coaches poll, only No. 5 Brea-Olinda isn’t represented.
Wilson heads the field at Newport Harbor, playing Fullerton in the first round today at 3 p.m. Defending champion Corona del Mar, ranked No. 4 in Division I and No. 3 in the county, plays host to Long Beach Poly. San Clemente, ranked No. 2 in Division I and No. 1 in the county, plays Woodbridge at Irvine High. Servite, ranked fourth in the county and first in Division I, plays Long Beach Millikan at Tustin High. Games continue until 8 tonight and from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday.
The semifinals will be Saturday at 9:50 and 11 a.m. at Newport Harbor. The winners will meet at 3:40 p.m. for the championship.
