BREA — An 18-month-old boy was in critical condition Monday after falling from the second-story window of a home, authorities said.
The incident occurred about 4:20 p.m. in the 3400 block of East Elm Street, when the toddler leaned against an open, screened window, police said.
Brea Lt. Chester Panique said the toddler was playing on a bed near the window at the time of the accident.
“The screen gave way and he fell to the ground,” Panique said.
Authorities said the boy was flown by helicopter to UCI Medical Center in Orange, suffering from shoulder and head injuries. The youngster was conscious and crying while being transported to the hospital, they said.
Panique said the boy’s mother had placed the toddler on the floor to play with other children prior to the accident. “Somehow he got up on the bed and leaned against the screen,” he said.
Police, who declined to identify the boy or his mother, said the incident was being treated as an accident and will not be investigated further.
