Police Must Be Held Accountable, Inquiry Says

VICTORIA, Canada — British Columbia police forces must be held to stricter public accountability to counter perceptions of bias and brutality, a two-year-long inquiry has concluded.
Commissioner Wallace Oppal, in his final report to the provincial government, said policing in British Columbia must be overhauled through independent public processes.
The province’s NDP government, which is studying the 317 recommendations, launched Oppal’s inquiry in June 1992 following a series of controversial police shootings.
