LOS ANGELES : Student Absences Blamed in Part on Boycott Drive

Nearly a fourth of 550 enrolled students failed to show up for class Friday at a Compton elementary school, and administrators attributed some of the absences to activists’ efforts to organize a school boycott.
Some students on their way to McKinley Elementary School were told by adults that classes had been canceled, Principal Jane Harris said. The absentee rate normally is about 15% on Friday, officials said.
Earlier in the week, a group of protesters at the school had threatened to organize a boycott to protest the transfer of a popular instructional aide.
