SAN DIEGO — A 38-year-old orthopedic surgeon was shot in the chest and left wrist Wednesday morning as he drove along Interstate 805.
William Shoemaker, who has offices in Chula Vista, Santee and San Diego, was listed in good condition at Mercy Hospital after undergoing surgery. Police have no suspects and no motive for the shooting.
A police spokesman said Shoemaker was shot through the windshield of his BMW as he drove south on I-805. Shoemaker was talking to his office on his cellular phone when he was struck.
Witnesses reported hearing popping sounds and seeing a pickup truck that had been driving ahead of Shoemaker suddenly pull to the right and get off the freeway. The truck was found near a neighborhood bar.
