Street violence erupted across Protestant areas of Northern Ireland, with gangs hijacking and burning cars, throwing firebombs and, in one case, shooting at police. Police and troops calmed the disturbances after a few hours. Protestant politicians warned police that further violence could erupt in Belfast if they do not change their tactics in hard-line loyalist neighborhoods. Tension between police and loyalist groups have been worsened by worries over a 2-week-old Irish Republican Army cease-fire.
