OXNARD : Funds OKd for Police Patrol of Schools
- Share via
The Oxnard City Council and Oxnard Union High School District each earmarked $9,000 this week to pay two police officers to patrol the city’s three public high schools during the first eight weeks of school.
Oxnard police are worried that gang-related attacks and retaliations over the summer could carry over into the opening weeks at Hueneme, Channel Islands and Oxnard high schools.
In 2 1/2, 79 juveniles were arrested in Oxnard for violent acts, including 29 on weapons charges and six for attempted murder, police said.
To aid the youth services officer assigned to the schools, the Police Department deployed two officers to the schools for two weeks, using its overtime funds. To extend the police presence for eight weeks, the department asked the city and the high school district to split the $18,000 overtime cost.
The City Council approved the expenditure Tuesday and the high school district did the same Wednesday night.
