Coach: Rocky Ciarelli (12th year).
1993: 16-6 overall, 12-2 in the Sunset League. Lost to Los Alamitos in the Southern Section Division II semifinals and lost to Torrance in the State quarterfinals.
Key returners: Mindy Adams, 5-8, setter, Sr.; Dana Atkinson, 5-9, outside hitter, So.; Jill Meyers, 5-11, middle blocker, Jr.; Sandy Smith, 5-5, back row, Sr.; Stacey Vanderwal, 5-11, middle blocker, Sr.; Kim Watts, 5-8, outside hitter, Sr.; Melissa Wendt, 6-2, outside hitter, Jr.
Key newcomers: Allison Ciarelli, 5-6, setter, So.; Nicole Gale, 5-5, back row, Jr.; Keeley Ziegler, 5-10, outside hitter, Jr.
Outlook: The Sunset League will be stronger with the addition of Division II powers Esperanza and Los Alamitos. “It’s going to be tough,” Ciarelli said. “This season, the Oilers won’t have to depend solely on Wendt, a first-team All-Division II selection. Teams won’t be able to key on just Melissa, so when we get to fourth and fifth games, she won’t be as tired. We have good overall balance and our blocking could be good.” Two of Ciarelli’s nieces, Allison Ciarelli and Ziegler, could also contribute.
