1994 PREP PREVIEW / BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY
Mater Dei
Coach: Rick Martinez (third year).
1993: Third in the South Coast League; eighth at the Orange County Championships.
Key returners: Daniel Gonzalez, Sr.; Dan Kozak, Sr.; Chris Lore, Sr.; Bobby Miske, So.; Brian Mitzel, Sr.; Matt Wickersham, Jr.
Key newcomers: Adrian Brown, So.; Evan Wride, So.; Michael Zepeda, So.
Outlook: In only his third year on the job, Martinez, a Mater Dei alumnus, has the Monarchs near the top of the county’s cross-country scene. With four outstanding seniors leading the way, the Monarchs should be able to overcome any inconsistencies that popped up to bite them last season. At one time, the Monarchs broke into the county’s top five last season. Mitzel, Kozak, Gonzalez and Lore head a solid squad that finished the regular season ranked ninth in the Times Orange County poll. Gonzalez finished 10th at year’s South Coast League finals, where the Monarchs were a disappointing third. Miske was one of the county’s strongest freshmen runners last fall.
