COLLEGE ROUNDUP : SCC Defeats Mills for First Women’s Soccer Victory
The Southern California women’s soccer team won its first game, defeating Mills College, 11-0, Saturday in Oakland.
Last year, in their first season of play, the Vanguards were 0-19-1.
Joy Pelletier, a freshman from Brethren Christian, scored four goals, Jamie Gardiner, a sophomore from Sunny Hills, had three goals and three assists, Deann Salcido scored two and Katrina Bohn and Julia Alessi each scored one for the Vanguards (1-0), who led, 7-0, at the half. Meggen Fleener, a freshman from Newport Harbor, had three assists.
In the Reebok Classic women’s soccer tournament:
Cal State Fullerton 9, Long Beach State (club team) 0--Amber Dickey and Erin Rico each scored two goals for the Titans. The Titans will face Cal State San Bernardino at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Titan Stadium in the championship game.
In the Reebok Classic men’s soccer tournament:
Cal State Fullerton 1, Cal State Sacramento 0--Tony Jaime scored in the 87th minute on an assist by Adrian Cortez to give seventh-ranked Fullerton the victory. The Titans will play Stanford for the tournament title at 4 p.m. Monday at Titan Stadium.
In men’s nonconference soccer:
UC Irvine 2, Gonzaga 0--Senior P.J. Polowski scored two goals and goalkeeper Chris Taylor had five saves for Irvine (1-0).
The Master’s 2, Southern California College 1--Bryan Lee scored in the 30th minute of overtime for the season-opening victory. Matthew Clements scored in the 85th minute for Southern California College to tie the score 1-1.
In the San Diego women’s volleyball tournament:
Cal State Fullerton drops to 0-3--The Titan women lost two matches in pool play Saturday. They were defeated, 15-10, 15-4, 15-13, in the early match by San Diego despite nine kills by Jennifer Lipski and Stephanie Cargill. In the afternoon, Fullerton was defeated, 15-3, 14-16, 15-8, 15-0, by Sam Houston State. Again the team was led by Lipski with 16 kills and Cargill with 14.
In the Anteater women’s volleyball invitational:
Cal State Northridge 3, UC Irvine 1--Northridge defeated the host Anteaters, 16-18, 15-2, 15-8, 15-9, behind 21 kills from Missy Clements. The Matadors won the tournament with a 3-0 record. All-tournament selections Popi Edwards and Stacey Mitchell each had 16 kills for the Anteaters, who finished 1-2 in the tournament.
In the Concordia Labor Day Women’s Volleyball Festival:
Cal State Los Angeles wins title--Defending champion Los Angeles beat Concordia in the quarterfinals, 17-15, 15-13, 15-11, and beat Fresno Pacific, 11-15, 15-11, 15-10, 9-15, 15-9, in the title match.
