ATLANTIC CITY: 125 Years of Ocean Madness...
ATLANTIC CITY: 125 Years of Ocean Madness by Vicki Gold Levi & Lee Eisenberg (10 Speed Press: $18.95; 214 pp.). Before Las Vegas arose and Donald Trump achieved new heights (or depths) of vulgarity, Atlantic City offered vacationing Americans amusements, publicity stunts and pageants. Established in the 1850s as a resort for Philadelphians, Atlantic City quickly became a place for fads. In 1915, James Huneker wrote, “Atlantic City is not a treat for the introspective . . . it is hard, glittering, unspeakably cacophonous, and it never sleeps at all.†Levi and Eisenberg chronicle some noteworthy events in the city’s colorful past.
