OUTLOOK
Had it not been for a tough Whittier defense, the Southern Section Division VI title game would have been a showcase for the league. Western lost to eventual runner-up Whittier, 24-12, in the semifinals. That loss, however, did not diminish a season replete with success. Western is again a serious league title contender. Although the Pioneers are strong and talented, there are many questions about the offense. Howell must find a triggerman, following the graduation of standout quarterback Brandon Brennan. Chambers might get the call. Although inexperienced, he possesses the skills needed to lead. Defensively, Howell has less to worry about. Starkey was a first-team all-league selection last season and is eager to run into the opposition. Bell can kick with the county’s best.
