PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Third-Stringer Salisbury Cut by Oilers
- Share via
The Houston Oilers cut former USC quarterback Sean Salisbury and replaced him with practice team member Lee Williamson. Salisbury, who spent the last four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and was a part-time starter that past two, was expected to back up starter Cody Carlson when he joined the Oilers as a free agent on April 28. However, he was dropped to No. 3 behind Carlson and Bucky Richardson and refused to take a pay cut. . . . The Denver Broncos re-signed linebacker Karl Mecklenburg, ending protracted negotiations. Mecklenburg, who turned 34 on Thursday, will reportedly receive about $300,000 with incentives that could triple that amount. He has played for the Broncos for 11 seasons. . . . The San Francisco 49ers pulled out of the bidding for free-agent cornerback Deion Sanders, saying salary-cap constraints made it impossible to match or beat competing offers. Sanders reportedly has received offers that would pay him between $3 million and $4 million per year. Atlanta and Miami remain in the running.
